One of the best things about working part-time is that I get one day every week to spend with my little boy. Yet even though I have a day set aside for coveted quality time, it’s surprisingly easy to let house work and errands take precedence and to plonk him in front of a Pixar movie for half the day. Lately, Sydney’s cold weather and the stress that comes with packing, moving and then unpacking our house has made it far too easy to push our weekly adventures to playgrounds and cafes to the side. So, when we got the invitation to see Hi-5 live and watch a sneak peak of their new show ‘House of Dreams’ and the event just so happened to fall on my day off, I jumped at the chance.
First of all, Mr 3 loves music and Hi-5 has some pretty timeless tunes. Even though our favourite from the original group (Kathleen) is long gone, our little one bounces along when the Hi-5 theme song comes on. Getting an opportunity to get to know the current singers was pretty cool.
Secondly, heading out meant Mr 3 could ride a train. And he loves trains.
I catch the train into the city every day and there’s nothing special (or even pleasant) about the ritual, but boarding a train with a doe-eyed toddler gives the public transport experience a bit of sparkle that a normal commuter would never believe existed. He marvelled at the map of the train network, stared out the window in awe as we sped past traffic and trees, gasped as another train drove past us, and smiled shyly when other people boarded the same carriage. I know that riding public transport for 75 minutes could have easily been a frustrating experience (with or without a toddler), but one thing that I love about hanging out with Mr 3 is that he reminds me to see all that goodness and potential that the ordinary things hold. That’s life through the eyes of my little boy.
We got off the train at Chatswood and made our way to The Concourse and it wasn’t long before we were under the Theatre and backstage, where Hi-5 were rehearsing.
Here’s the thing, though. Yes, my kid loves music. He loves singing, dancing and rocking with his ukulele and drum kit. He’s a massive fan of The Wiggles (he even sleeps with his Wiggles DVDs). He’s also hugely into Bruno Mars and Pharrell (and lately he’s been booty shakin’ Montell Jordan and TLC). When Hi-5’s Dayen opened the door with a big smile and open arms I expected Mr 3 to get really excited. But, instead of jumping up and down in glee as most of the other kids did, he grabbed me like a koala, folded himself into foetal position in my arms and refused to say hello, let alone get out of my lap and dance along during the rehearsal.
Poor Ainsley, Dayen, Mary, Tanika and Stevie. They had to work extra hard for love and affection from my kid! To their credit, they were smiles, big waves, happy voices and open arms. My little guy is just really shy. Eventually, when Chats popped in and said hello, Mr 3 removed his face from under my arm.
As Hi-5 got the crowd warmed up and started singing, I caught Mr 3 bopping along.
Confession: I was soooo impressed with Hi-5. It’s easy to forget that beneath the bright outfits and laser white smiles, these guys are professional performers. Their vocals really stood out when they sang in that rehearsal room! I love a good harmony, and these guys delivered!
The kids who came along – mine included – absolutely loved the show!
‘Hi-5 House of Dreams’ is set up in a Hi-5 slumber party (complete with pillow fights, silly jokes and fun stories). Eventually, Ainsley, Dayen, Mary, Stevie and Tanika enter the world of dreams, and find themselves in the jungle, fairy gardens, outer space, underwater and even in the super cool world of superheroes! Each dream comes alive on the stage with vivid lighting, colourful projections, exciting stage design and of course, a whole lot of Hi-5 magic! We didn’t get to witness the full production (but will be at the opening show at Luna Park in a few weeks), but they really made our imagination come to life with fun songs and lots of jokes, props and laughter.
Want tickets to see Hi-5 House of Dreams?
After all that fun during our adventure last week, I am so happy to be giving away a double-pass to Hi-5’s House of Dreams! The lucky winner gets two tickets to the 1:30pm show at The Concourse, Chatswood on Tuesday 7 July.
3 runners up get a Hi-5 merch bag with a Hi–5 DVD, a Hi–5 hand clapper, sticker, 4 x Hi-5 bath bombs, a poster and signed card!
In ‘Hi-5 House of Dreams’, Hi-5 take some wild, wonderful and wacky dream adventures with the help of Chats, the Dream Master, and her magical Dream Catcher. The show features some well-loved Hi-5 songs like Dream On, Underwater Discovery, and Action Heroes, and also offers plenty of interactive elements for children; they even get to help Chats with her dream magic! Children will feel a part of the action and, as always, there’ll be heaps of singing and dancing, along with bubbles, bouncy balls and dazzling disco ball lighting.
To win tickets, all you have to do is fill in the form below AND make sure you leave a comment at the end of this post with an answer to this question:
What’s your kid’s favourite song right now? Ever since last Thursday, we’ve been listening to ‘Hi-5 All the Best’ on Spotify non-stop (before that, his answer would have been Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars).
So, what’s on repeat on the stereo at your house/in your car?
